good weekend

October 21, 2006 By: deeva58 Category: My Daughter Nyomi, My Husband Bob Fabien, My Internet Business No Comments →

Last night was nice…Fabien, Nyomi, and I went to Books A Million and just read books and had hot chocolate…for about 3 hours.  It was relaxing.  Fabien brought his laptop and got some work done for his grad studies.  We traded off with Nyomi every 30 minutes or so and I got a chance to find some great business books to jump start my consulting practice.  Fabien found a motivational CD series but I don’t think he bought it.  Nyomi got to play in the children’s area on the train and browsed a few books.  She ended up coming home with a pink poodle and I came home with 4 consulting, marketing, and web design books.
Besides that I’m reading a book I got last week called “Reallionnaire: Nine steps to Becoming Rich from the INside Out” by Farrah Gray.  This guy is 19 and became a millionnaire by the age of 14.  He didn’t have it easy by any means, so what sparked my interest in his story is that he started with little to nothing, and at a fairly young age (at 4!) with an avid interest in business … so that, coupled with a fueled desire to one day see his mother out of  the ‘hood and able to afford nice things…and his desire to start enterprises and see them grow…that’s what really interested me about this guy.  He was full of passion and desire to see his projects through to completion…and he failed a lot of times, but never gave up on the inspiration, so that kept him going.
That is so cool.  I’m only mid-way through the book but I’m looking forward to reading what happens next.
I look forward to church tomorrow.  We’re having some guests from a related church in Birmingham who are also under the covering of T.D. Jakes.   They are supposed to be bringing their dance team with them also…

Will write again next week…

short weekend

October 19, 2006 By: deeva58 Category: My Daughter Nyomi No Comments →

This weekend was loads of fun and way too short.
I did some shopping at the Summit– something I rarely do these days. It was relaxing, hanging out at Barnes and Noble (they had a story hour that Nyomi got to join so that was nice), then I hit every store at the Summit for good measure. Picked up a Cotton Candy Christmas candle from Bath and Body Works and some sweats from Old Navy– something to give me a little motivation to work out this winter. And I couldn’t resist the toasty multi-colored knit socks. I’m feeling winter already and I’m loving it.
I just wish every day was a shopping day. Sigh! :-(
I was like a kid in a candy store this weekend…getting out to shop is something I rarely get a chance to do…maybe once a year.  I think it’s because any money I make goes right back into my business or goes on my daughter…but I guess it would be nice to save a little for “spending” $ for a shopping spree once in a while…no shame in that.
Today was good…ballet was nice.  They did some ballet and tap, no tumbling.  After hearing a group of moms discuss how they wish there were some place where they could information on events in Tuscaloosa just for moms I thought it would be a great idea to start a website just for Tuscaloosa moms…
I’m working on the idea now and with the help of some other moms we could pull this off.  There was one lady who moved here from Huntsville and was like “what in the world is there to do in this town?  There’s NOTHING!”  then people started telling her about the parks, CHOM, kindermusik, gymnastics, karate, yoga, community music school, swim kids, etc.  That’s when I realized that someone just coming to this town could find a local website useful…
So that’s another project in the works and I’ll keep posted on that.
Meanwhile I just shipped off the Iriver and shuffle (so long, Iriver.  I will miss you a little!)
It’s a little late for dinner now.  I don’t feel like cooking really.
I feel like I’ve been cooking all day.  Well I have literally — breakfast and lunch and making snacks in between.  I almost live in the kitchen .
I think we’ll just have to do a breakfast for dinner or have fruit tonight b/c it’s getting late.  I just want to sit here at my PC and surft the web, clear my mind for a minute.  Maybe go take a nice bubble bath and get out of “mommy” and “wifey” mode for just a few moments.
I think that’s what I”ll do.
Signing off…

heading for B’ham

October 13, 2006 By: deeva58 Category: My Daughter Nyomi, My Husband Bob Fabien No Comments →

This weekend Hubby has drill so we’re heading off to B’ham in a few hours.
Meanwhile my 4-y.o. is still coughing every 5 minutes or so, so to the doc we go again.

Maybe I’ll get to go to Barnes and Noble at the Summit this weekend…and maybe even the Cheesecake factory…although I won’t be able to eat much of the good stuff like the 4-cheese pasta.
Last time I went i ordered an omelet. Was pretty good but I stuffed myself silly then went to bed about an hour later. Can we say indegestion.

Oh yeah…the Ipod Shuffle and Iriver sold on Ebay last night for double the amount I started the bid for.
Pretty neat! Now the video Ipod is covered.

well it’s gonna be a busy weekend and I’ve got a few things to pack, so I best be going.

Doing better

October 11, 2006 By: deeva58 Category: Christian Faith, My Daughter Nyomi No Comments →

Nyomi is doing much better today. She’s coughing a little but she’s had no fever since yesterday. I think that 500 mg of Vitamin C and a big dose of prayer has helped her a lot.
She may be ready for her ballet class by this afternoon. I pray that her immune system continues to attack this cold before it turns into a full blown flu or something. She’s usually not prone to colds and infections but the minute I take her to the park she seems to come down with something.
Not this time. we’re fighting in Jesus’ name.

My Ipod Shuffle and Iriver are not selling yet though I have 6 watchers. If they don’t sell this week I may re-list them separately…or I may just be a kindheart and give them away to friends or something.
I’ve got an Ipod video coming my way today which I got for 1/2 price on ebay, so I’m looking forward to that!

This has been an interesting two weeks. I keep learning more and more about myself…and it’s not all that great either. Isn’t it like the Holy Spirit to reveal the things that we need to correct. It’s only for our good, I know…but it really stinks to know just how much changing I’ve gotta do. The good part, and the ONLY good part about it is, I know I have the help of my Savior to bring me through, teach me, and help me out.
For starters, I’ve got to be more patient. Life doesn’t always get thrown out at me what I want when I want it. Secondly, I’ve got to be more grateful. Contentment is what I strive for. It’s so easy to see what others have and think “boy, I wish I had such and such like so and so”. No…I have far too much to be grateful for than to sit around wishing I had something different. God is too good. I mean, I’m totally thankful…but there are just those moments when a bigger house looks quite appealing…you know what I mean.

I’ve had some rough moments this year, but through it all, God has been faithful to me. The Lord is just so good.

‘Kay…gotta get back to h.schooling..Nyomi’s waiting.

Nyomi visits the dentist

October 10, 2006 By: deeva58 Category: My Daughter Nyomi No Comments →

Today was her 2nd time seeing a dentist and she did great.  They had to check her bottom tooth which is coming in sideways…they say it’s normal and that it should straighten out on its own soon.

Then we came home to rest up before ballet and she fell asleep for three hours…quite a bit unusual for her b/c she hasn’t napped mid-day since she was a toddler.  I knew something was wrong…
she woke up with a slight fever so we couldn’t do ballet.  She was disappointed but understands she can make up for today on other day when she’s feeling better.

So I try to find orange juice but none left…but I did find a packet of vitamin C drink and gave that to her.  she drank the whole 4 ounces and lay back down.
She’ll be ok.
I think I heard her sneeze once…but other than that and the temp of 100.5, I don’t see any other symptoms…
If the fever gets just a tad worse in the next few hours I’ll have to take her back to the doc.

Busy day.

almost gave up

October 09, 2006 By: deeva58 Category: Homeschooling My Children, My Daughter Nyomi, My Internet Business No Comments →

Wow…just when I’m almost about to give up on my current business, the Lord always steps in and shows me that He is bigger than my problems and my worries.
The client I coached today on internet marketing decided to come on board as a full time client!  Whoo-hooo!    The Lord always knows how to keep us going when we’re about to give up and things are looking rough.
She’s a work at home mom (WAHM) who just needs a few pointers, tips and tutoring on how to make her web business really happen for her.  I pray God’s blessings over her endeavors and look forward to working with her.
Meanwhile, I’m still working with Family Impact on their designs and some new video footage they’ll have uploaded soon.  Can’t say much about it just yet but it’s going to be an exciting series of e-training class events for parents to be unveiled soon.

Let’s see…what else did I do this morning?

Well, Nyomi is asking for her homeschool lessons every 30 minutes so I actually have to sit down and think this afternoon about her schedule for the upcoming weeks and months…should we have a more formalized approach to learning?  I’ve learned that no matter what the books say (in Child Development theory you learn that it’s inappropriate to introduce younger children to seatwork)…you still have to determine your child’s interests and personality…some are ready and some are not.  It could be the fact that she has no siblings with whom to exhaust her energy, but Nyomi lives to learn and would gladly do worksheets all day long for “fun”.  In fact, I have to keep hunting down new material online to teach her just to keep up with her interests…
This morning we did a quick Bible lesson on Abraham but then she asked about Jesus in the manger so we covered that.  Afterward we worked on Language Arts.  I noticed that lately she’s been writing her letters and numbers backwards because she practices her letters using her stencil, but she usually flips it backwards when practicing!  :-)  So we’ll get that sorted out…
Fun stuff.
Okay, then we worked on Math.  Remember those math centers I was cutting out and working on a few days ago?  Finally got two of them complete.  Today her assignment was to place the frogs on a lily pad, count them and record how many there are, then make them hop away to a second lily pad, count how many hopped away, then count how many were left on the first lily pad.
She’s still working on that right now and waiting on me to check …but then got sidetracked with the Bearenstain Bears so I figured I’d blog for a minute.

I almost got her into a DaySchool program but they filled up right in the nick of time…so i’ll have to wait for another semester and by then she’ll be getting ready for kindergarten anyways.
But it’s fun.  I enjoy teaching her and I would gladly do this every day of my life.

Vegetariansm…still going strong.

Almost gave up on that too…but glad I didn’t.  My body feels better for it.  I think I’ll start re-introducing meat back into my system in another month or so…a little at a time.  I have to admit I do feel lighter and not so “stopped up”!  (Believe me, I was stopped up– but that’s another story I’m sure no one wants to read about).

Last night I added a new episode to the Christian Ladies Talk Radio podcast.  Will be sending out a newsletter later today.

That’s about it for now…staying busy.  I’ll need to rest in about an hour.  I think maybe I’ll take a break in about 30 minutes, have a milk shake and go check the mail.  Maybe I’ll go out for a bit and enjoy some fresh air too, perhaps take a walk.  Lord knows I need to walk.

Ebay for Educators?

Wait — I found something else interesting.

Ebay for educators? :-) I’d like to know what you think about this, Cynt…

Edutopia

GEEKY POST DISCLAIMER

Okay that said…

I got so excited today when I saw the online interactive version of the Edutopia magazine. For those of you who don't know, my field of study the last 2 years was in Interactive Technology and my interests lie in digital media and e-training.

Anyways, I thumbed through this magazine, almost literally. I mean, they have the page turn shuffle sounds and everything, plus areas where you can write and save notes. I thought that was pretty cool.

I love to see how our school systems are integrating technology into their curriculum. The few schools who are doing an awesome job are worthy of Edutopia's feature stories…I just wish there were more schools in Alabama who got featured for tech integration…and maybe I just wish there were more schools in Alabama that integrated technology successfully — and by this I mean teacher training and less emphasis on standardized testing to make way for creativity in the classroom, which could lead to room for tech learning.

I could actually go on a soapbox about this…about how technology is paving our future and without the necessary knowledge, tools, and resources, our kids are leaving high school without so much as an inkling about how to successfully type a paper in Microsoft Word or create a presentation in Power Point.
Of course, this isn't true in all cases, but for the most part it is. Some people would argue that our kids are bombarded with TOO much technology (video games, television, cell phones, the infamous Ipod)…but what I say is…why shouldn't it be utilized within academia to actually REACH our kids with their own language?

Just maybe this is to be my project some time in the near future…hence the business loan (or maybe even a grant?) All I know is, technology should be happening in today's classroom.

vegetarianism

October 06, 2006 By: deeva58 Category: My Daughter Nyomi No Comments →

I've been having trouble digesting meat lately…I don't know what it is…perhaps it's the “getting older” syndrome, but everytime I eat meat it never digests well and I feel sick for weeks at a time.
So I'm trying something new and different for me — vegetarianism.  I wont' go completely vegan b/c I've gotta have my eggs but I found that vegetarian recipes are not so bad and I don't miss the meat (as much as I love meat!)

Maybe I'll keep this up…or maybe i won't…but I just have to do this for a little while at least to get rid of the gout symptoms.  One thing I'll miss for sure is salmon — but I've been doing pretty good for the past week and I'm feeling better already.  So I can do without.
And the whole wheat pastas and bread only — that's going ok.  I'm trying to stay away from too much bread and use rice bread mostly since it's gluten and yeast free.   I'm also on a cleanse I got from our local health food store, which I think will help out a lot.
Now the one thing I absolutely have to start doing again is exercising.  I should walk every day but I don't.  On those rainy days I really don't have an excuse since I have the Walk Away the Pounds video series:

Anyway…so I've got one person watching my item on Ebay so far.  Maybe by the end of the week the bids will start flowing in.  Oh, and by the way, I did finally get the item link for my Ipod and Iriver for bid on ebay…so if you want to bid here's the link, just click here.

I gotta run…my daughter needs to get up bright and early this morning so she'll go to bed early tonight too.

selling my ipod shuffle and iriver

October 06, 2006 By: deeva58 Category: My Daughter Nyomi No Comments →

Well I should be in bed right now…but I finally found some quiet time for the night.
Anybody want an Ipod Shuffle and Iriver H10 combo?
It's listed on Ebay right now…both for under $50 as one combo deal.  For some reason Ebay hasn't updated my listing yet so I'll post it once I get the link tomorrow.

I'm about ready for the Ipod (video) Nano now.  I liked the IRiver mostly because of its recording capabilities and AM/FM tuner…but I'm more of an Itunes person.  Since podcasts are my thing I think a switch would be great.  I”m gonna miss my little recorder though but there are lots of things about IRiver that I simply won't miss…like having to sync it up using Windows Media Player, which I absolutely cannot stand.  Its interface is definitely not up to par with Itunes' and it's really difficult to sync up a podcast from an Itunes folder to the Iriver devise using WMP… it's really frustrating.  So after about 4 months of frustration…time to move on.

Hopefully someone will bid in the next 7 days and then I can use the $ toward my new Ipod Nano, and THEN I'll be happy camper.
