    September 26, 2007

I know I haven’t updated in a while, but this month has been so busy and we’ve been having a blast. I picked up some curriculum on sale at our learning education store 2 days ago and it’s exciting to know that we can really meet our learning objectives for the year with these few workbooks!  I’m glad I don’t have to pull anything out of the “magic hat”. Honestly, sometimes I just don’t feel like hunting down resources from all over the internet. It’s nice to have a workbook or guide right at my hands for daily use, and of course, I can always modify it as needed.

Let’s see…the Abeka language arts curriculum?? Not exactly what I’d expected when we made the purchase at the homeschool fair. The teacher’s guide is more geared toward a larger classroom setting, as opposed to a private instruction or homeschool setting…and I absolutely can’t stand scripted curriculum which tells me how to teach and what to say. Suggestions are fine, but I think the Abeka program goes a little further than the suggestion mode and sounds very scripted. Example - “write student’s name in cursive and place on the desk…then greet students with the alphabet song found on page (x)…then say “this is how we write the letter ‘i’…who is our friend for the letter ‘i’? The Indian boy! Repeat after me…’i'…” Okay, you get the point.

    Too scripted for me.

For language arts, we’ve found ourselves simply reading lots of books and talking about the sounds the letters make- currently focusing on both long and short vowel sounds. Nyomi loves to read the bible to me, so we count that as our Bible learning time also. We do have some bible curriculum, although I’m finding just how unecessary it is… We use Explorers, and we have the New Testament workbook for kindergarten. We find that just talking about bible stories and reading them straight from the bible is the best method.

Math has been one of our most fun subjects. We’re using Math-U-See, a Pretend & Play Cash Register with workbook (for money), plus flashcards for telling time. The Math-U-See is a well-grounded curriculum that is covering her basic foundational knowledge of math concepts. She’s learning place value of ones (or units), tens, and hundreds, counting 0-100, skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s, and currently addition. Later she’ll learn some subtraction, multiplying is introduced, and telling time. All of this using the manipulatives is really helping her tremendously and she can’t wait for math time.

For social studies, we’re studying the presidents…just stuff we’re finding off the internet. We also bought a small booklet for kindergartners about the community and rules, presidents, and other social studies facts so we’ll integrate that. Science…hmmmm…after the sunflower project we seem to be at a stand still. Mostly we’ve been looking at pictures of animals and discussing their habitats. I think I’d like for us to start a unit on senses and do some experiments with that…I’ll keep you posted.

I’m STILL looking for a good set of cheap music note flashcards. I thought maybe I could find some for free download on the internet, but to no avail. Perhaps I’ll try ebay. Piano is going well — we’re mostly in review of songs she already has learned. We started a new song this week called “Ode To Joy”, but before we go any further with new songs I want Nyomi to have a better concept of the notes she’s reading and being able to truly recognize them with or without the name of the note placed beside it. Hence, the flashcards are needed for daily review.

French…that’s something my husband is helping her with. I’m going to dub him our official French instructor since that was his native language and he’s fluent. I’ve done a few French games with her, and that’s been fun…but nothing helps as much as hearing the French in every day spoken language. I also bought a little CD and booklet curriculum for young kids to listen and learn French through song and phrases. Nyomi is loving that CD and listens to it in her spare time. Well, that’s an update on our reviews for this month. Next time, I’ll take more pictures of projects she’s embarked on since we plan to do more of those in the upcoming weeks. Until next time…

    business ranting

    January 25, 2007

I found this  pretty cool place to get a free local voicemail number, and it's a community site too  — http://www.privatephone.com/

Meanwhile…things are going well.  Hubby is home, we just had dinner, and Nyomi is playing in her bedroom.
I’m in the middle of a couple of things, like shredding some old bills for one, checking up on financials, and planning for tomorrow's meetings.
I had a meeting today with a few ladies from Atlanta who are working on a web project and wanted to possibly hire me out to do some podcast consulting.  But when I noticed their complete site was done in PHP (and I'm no PHP gal) I couldn't make the appropriate uploads to their site — so we're gonna sit on it a while and wait to see if their current web designer can become their webmaster and be a 3rd party consultant while I handle the marketing and podcast stuff.  Hopefully this will all work out and I can get to work consulting with them soon enough.
I definitely need them :-)  And if the gospel promotion artists who called me last week will sign, that would be off the chain for this month's revenues!
I got my 1st  bill with the phone company today for advertising Faith Media — so, yes…I need the clients.
Pass the word!  www.faith-media.com -  coaching and consulting for podcasting, videocasting, internet marketing, website design, graphics design.
I also keep a business blog called the “eMarketing Technology Blog“.  Check that out for more info on my tech rants.  I try to update it weekly.
Maybe in another post I’ll talk about the podcasts I have going, but i’m in the middle of phasing out at least 2 of those and streamline them.  It’s kind of difficult, though, once you’re already listed in directories (most directories won't let you change info).
‘Kay…it’s time for some spiritual nourishment now.  Enough business for one day.
I’m gonna go see what Fabien is watching and hang out with him a bit.  Then on to the Word.  I’m trying to get through Genesis and my goal was one month but already it’s taken me 3 months and I’m not even half way through.  I have to be more consistent with my studies.  I think what’s happening is that I get stuck on one chapter for too long (I also listen to a podcast that teaches the book of Genesis at the same time as I’m reading), so that’s part of what’s slowing me down…I just want to get  through the Old Testament so I can have a better feel for it than I used to.
    Well off I go.

    good weekend

    October 21, 2006

Last night was nice…Fabien, Nyomi, and I went to Books A Million and just read books and had hot chocolate…for about 3 hours.  It was relaxing.  Fabien brought his laptop and got some work done for his grad studies.  We traded off with Nyomi every 30 minutes or so and I got a chance to find some great business books to jump start my consulting practice.  Fabien found a motivational CD series but I don’t think he bought it.  Nyomi got to play in the children’s area on the train and browsed a few books.  She ended up coming home with a pink poodle and I came home with 4 consulting, marketing, and web design books.
Besides that I’m reading a book I got last week called “Reallionnaire: Nine steps to Becoming Rich from the INside Out” by Farrah Gray.  This guy is 19 and became a millionnaire by the age of 14.  He didn’t have it easy by any means, so what sparked my interest in his story is that he started with little to nothing, and at a fairly young age (at 4!) with an avid interest in business … so that, coupled with a fueled desire to one day see his mother out of  the ‘hood and able to afford nice things…and his desire to start enterprises and see them grow…that’s what really interested me about this guy.  He was full of passion and desire to see his projects through to completion…and he failed a lot of times, but never gave up on the inspiration, so that kept him going.
That is so cool.  I’m only mid-way through the book but I’m looking forward to reading what happens next.
I look forward to church tomorrow.  We’re having some guests from a related church in Birmingham who are also under the covering of T.D. Jakes.   They are supposed to be bringing their dance team with them also…

    Will write again next week…

    heading for B’ham

    October 13, 2006

This weekend Hubby has drill so we’re heading off to B’ham in a few hours.
Meanwhile my 4-y.o. is still coughing every 5 minutes or so, so to the doc we go again.

Maybe I’ll get to go to Barnes and Noble at the Summit this weekend…and maybe even the Cheesecake factory…although I won’t be able to eat much of the good stuff like the 4-cheese pasta.
Last time I went i ordered an omelet. Was pretty good but I stuffed myself silly then went to bed about an hour later. Can we say indegestion.

Oh yeah…the Ipod Shuffle and Iriver sold on Ebay last night for double the amount I started the bid for.
Pretty neat! Now the video Ipod is covered.

well it’s gonna be a busy weekend and I’ve got a few things to pack, so I best be going.
